According to Lincoln Diamant in his book "Chaining the Hudson" (Carol Publishing Group, 2004), the links outside the Chicago History Museum were part of a set of links fraudulently represented as a section of The Great Chain (forged during the Revolution) and sold to Chicago sweets manufacturer Charles Frederick Gunther in the 1880s. The Chicago History Museum referred to the chain as a fraud in its newsletter in 1973. It's an interesting story!
