The Elks National Memorial: Rotunda [sculptures by James Earle Fraser and murals by Eugene Francis Savage]



Memorial Rotunda..
The Memorial has many beautiful sculptures and murals..
The rotunda has four sculptures representing the Four Cardinal Virtues of the Order of Elks; Brotherly Love, Fidelity, Justice and Charity. These heroic sculptures in gilded bronze are by James Earle Fraser.
Directly above the sculptures are murals representing Army, Air Force, Navy and those who do not fight, but assist in other ways.. These are by muralist Eugene Francis Savage..





As mentioned earlier, directly above each of the sculptures is a mural. The murals represent Army, Air Force, Navy and those who do not fight, but assist in other ways.. These are by muralist Eugene Francis Savage..

The mural directly above the pediment symbolizes the Army, Combat on Land. Two soldiers carry their wounded comrade through the barbed wire entanglements while shells burst around them.

The mural directly above the pediment represents the Air Force, Combat from Above, with a plane falling towards earth, the pilot and mechanic grasing each other as they hurl through Space, searchlights scanning the skies of a ruined city in the background.

The mural directly above the pediment represents the Navy, Combat on Sea, with a wounded helmsman falling away from the Wheel and a fellow pilot grasping it to steer the ship through troubled sea.

The mural directly above the pediment represents those who do not fight, but assist in other ways, the Ship of Mercy out in the ocean, the Red Cross nurses who care for wounded and the aged Councilor comforting the distraught.

  1. It's my understanding that Charles Atlas was the model for a statue or painting in the rotunda.
